Staff Spotlight: Elaina Ruesch

What is your current role at Hand in Hand?

I work in the school age program. My role is a Direct Service Provider (DSP)

Can you tell us a little about your background and journey to your current role?

When I was in 6th grade I joined a club called partners club. In this club I worked with a group of peers with special needs. We did class work together and went on field trips. Since then I have always had a heart for working in a field with children of all abilities. I found Hand in Hand through a childhood class at Pleasant Valley durring our visit and I applied to work here the same day.

What do you enjoy most about your work here?

I am always excited to go into work at Hand in Hand. Getting to come to work each day and do what I love makes everyday day so special. I love  being able to do fun hands on activity’s and games with all of the participants!

Could you share a memorable experience or accomplishment from your time with us?

The most memorable experience I have made was when I worked  at the HIH Glow party in February. This was a special dance for the participants! It was 3 hours of dancing, singing, and having so much fun!

How do you approach challenges in your role?

I try to always keep a positive mind and look on things. Whenever there’s a challenge that I have to overcome, I try my best to stay positive and not stressed. I also reach out to other staff for help if need be!

Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests?

I am involved in pageantry. I currently hold the title of Miss Iowa’s Teen American Royal Beauties. I spend lots of my time doing community service and appearances as Miss Iowa’s Teen. I am also on an All-Star cheerleading team where I compete around the USA.

Who or what motivates you to do your best every day?

As Miss Iowa’s Teen, I am a public figure. I am motivated to do my best everyday by all of the younger girls who look up to what I do. I strive each day to be the best role model for them and to put my best foot forward.
