Deb's Story: Supporting Hand in Hand Through Time and Donations
Deb Mueller first connected with Hand in Hand as a volunteer during Read United with the United Way of the Quad Cities. She spent time reading to school-age kids at the Edwards Church location in Davenport.
“I could see how much the kids enjoyed having someone there to read to and or with them. It warmed my heart, and I was grateful to have the opportunity to be part of such a great organization. The more I learned about Hand in Hand and People with Purpose, their adult program, I wanted to contribute what I could to support them,” she said.
Her involvement with Hand in Hand grew from there. Now, she serves on our Chili Cook-Off committee and is a monthly donor.
“I am most proud of my involvement in the Chili Fundraiser and being on the Chili Committee. It is exciting and rewarding to see all the participants in the cook-off, all the auction items and raffle items collected, and the attendees have the best time! It is most exciting when we learn we raised more dollars than the previous year!” Deb said.
Deb's commitment deepened when she became a monthly donor. She enjoys having a set amount she’s planned for in her budget to give consistently.
“I want to feel like I have done what I can to support the organizations I believe in. I do not have thousands or millions of dollars to give but give what I can monetarily and through donations of time. I want the organizations I believe in to be around for years to come!” she said.
Deb finds it rewarding to see the impact of her time and donations and appreciates that her contributions stay within the local community. She encourages others to get involved with organizations in their area, including Hand in Hand.
“I wish they knew how important Hand in Hand and PWP are to our community. The adults participating in PWP gain skills, like cooking, they probably wouldn’t if not given the opportunity to experience it at the PWP Clubhouse. They also volunteer in our community where they can make a positive impact, just like everyone else,” Deb said.
In addition to her work with Hand in Hand, Deb is active in many other causes. She’s a member of the Bettendorf Rotary and serves on the LobsterFest Committee. She is also an Ambassador for the Quad Cities Chamber, on the Go Red for Women Executive Leadership Team, and has been involved with the Heart Walk, Women United Steering Committee, Junior Achievement, March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction, March for Babies, and the United Way Delinquency Prevention Panel.
