Staff Spotlight: Jacey Sorenson
What is your current role at Hand in Hand?
I currently serve as the Lead Direct Support Professional (DSP) for the School Age Program.
Can you tell us a little about your background and journey to your current role?
I began my journey with Hand in Hand as a volunteer for the Camp Hand in Hand program in 2019, completing service-learning hours. After accumulating over 200 hours of volunteer work over two years, I transitioned into a caregiver role within the School Age Program in 2021. Two years later, I took on a staff support role during the summer, managing the classroom and creating buddy boards. Today, I am the Lead DSP for the School Age Program, where my focus is on creating a more activity-based program throughout the year.
What do you enjoy most about your work here?
I find great satisfaction in witnessing the growth and development of both the staff and participants. It's rewarding to see the school-age children engaged and having fun with the activities I plan for them each day.
Could you share a memorable experience or accomplishment from your time with us?
One of my most rewarding accomplishments is an ongoing effort—transforming the School Age Program into a more engaging and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
How do you approach challenges in your role?
I believe that teamwork is essential in overcoming challenges. Open communication and collaborating with others to share ideas and solutions are key. Additionally, I strive to maintain a positive attitude, even during stressful times, to help keep the team motivated and focused on our goals.
Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
I enjoy working out, and on weekends, I like to take my dog, Sully, on long hikes and runs.
Who or what motivates you to do your best every day?
I am motivated by the growth I see in the work I do, as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes from successfully completing tasks and making a positive impact.
