People With Purpose Clubhouse

This is the first time our People with Purpose participants are seeing their new space.

Inspired by the well-researched and successful model of Clubhouse International, our People with Purpose clubhouse is member-oriented and focuses on personal empowerment and dignity in a non-clinical, social environment. The PWP clubhouse model emphasizes each member’s strengths and encourages adults of all abilities to find their purpose in the volunteer experiences, community activities and friendships each day offers.

Clubhouse members and staff work alongside one another to operate the clubhouse, including the cleaning and maintenance of the space and the wellbeing of all members. While one member may choose a recipe to bake and share with others, another member may enjoy vacuuming or doing a load of laundry to keep the clubhouse clean.

To ensure all members are included in the daily tasks needed for clubhouse operations, our space was designed with accessibility in mind. Features like an adjustable roll-under sink, appliances at a height all can use, and an open floorplan, reflect universal design and the presence of adaptive materials and assistive technology ensure all adults are included and accommodated according to their needs.

Other features, like our administrative center and organized mechanical/supply room, ensures equality between members and staff. Although our admin space may look like an office, it features 3 separate workstations available for clubhouse members to use. This space doubles as a quiet place for our program director to work or host meetings, making it available to all who visit the PWP Clubhouse.

This program and new program space provides a high quality of life for adults of all abilities, while providing them support and experience to be successful. The People with Purpose clubhouse will serve as a home base for the adults where each person feels comfortable and successful.

The new space hosts a home-like feel and offers a welcoming entry way, a large dining area where everyone can sit together and have a family style meal, a full working kitchen where they can practice cooking skills, an office where they can work on their resumes and  learn office related tasks, a recreation space to have fun with friends and socialize, and a laundry space where participants can practice this important life skill.

With this new clubhouse space, we will expand the program to an average daily attendance of 20 participants (approximately 50 adults overall).
